Witnesses revealed the ill-fated truck had gallons of petrol on its trunk, which ignited the fire.

“There were three people in the vehicle at the time it caught fire. They quickly ran out when they saw the fire and told us it was due to the petrol at the back of their truck,” said Kayode Braimoh, a young mechanic who stood by the median of the road.

Officials of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, were able to put out the fire upon arriving the scene. The officials said a distress call alerted the agency to the incident and would have to probe the circumstance of the occurrence before making an official statement.

However, an official who pleaded anonymity because he was not authorized to speak on the matter said preliminary investigation showed one of the gallons of fuel the truck carried leaked, sparking the fire.

There were also men of the Rapid Response Squad, RRS, at the scene.

The fire scene is an eight-minute drive and about 2.1Kilometer from the Lagos State Government secretariat – the seat of power.
