Lagos lawmaker leds campaign for free blood donation

A lawmaker representing Lagos Island Constituency II at Lagos State House of Assembly, Honorable Sola Giwa has put together a blood donation campaign to celebrate Independence Day.

The campaign is scheduled to take place on Saturday October 07, 2016.

The campaign ‘Save a Life’ is to help raise awareness on the importance of people freely donating blood to ensure patients continue to get the blood platelet they require.

The event will start with a day walk from Sura Market to General Hospital, Lagos Island where educative talks will take place. Interest persons will then join the honorable in screening before donating blood.

Hon Giwa said his aim is to have at least 200 people donate that day. ‘This campaign is totally FREE and is open to the general public most especially the people of Lagos Island Constituency II’, he said.

The lawmaker further stated that the exercise was borne out of his passion and love for his people and Lagosians at large.

‘Every two seconds, someone somewhere needs blood. We need 70,000unit of blood transfusion. It is noteworthy to say that the blood you give today will save a life tomorrow,’ he said.

The campaign according to him is supported by the Lagos State Health Services, General Hospital, Lagos Island, Lagos State Health Service Commission and 12basket Limited.

‘I encourage everyone to come out to participate and use this medium to know your health status, genotype, and donate to save a life. By donating blood, you will be saving up to three human lives each time. Not only is donating blood extremely beneficial to those on the receiving end, it also has proven benefits to the person donating blood,’ he stated.
