$4.7 Million Data Journalism Initiative Launched in Africa

data-journalismThe organisation that helps run Hacks/Hackers chapters across Africa, Code For Africa have clinched a $4,7million investment from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to supercharge data journalism and‪#‎OpenData‬ across Africa for the next 3-years.

The investment, through  International Center for Journalists, will focusing on scaling up ‪#‎CitizenLabs‬ in four ‘hub’ countries: Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa and Tanzania.

It will also help kickstart large ‪#‎sensor‬ and ‪#‎drone‬ projects across the continent (including here in Nigeria), as well as help support even more data-driven ‪#‎CivicTech‬ projects that empower citizens on issues ranging from local healthcare, to social development.

Part of the support will go into expanding Code for Nigeria and local Hacks/Hackers chapters in Lagos and Abuja.
